Catalonia may not be the first region that comes to mind when thinking about rural tourism in Spain. Yet it brings together a surprising mix of factors that make it one of the most profitable and attractive places to run a rural hotel.

Affluent, loyal visitors

According to Via Empresa, the average daily spend of a rural tourist in Catalonia is higher than the national average – around €170 per couple per day – and among the highest in the country.

The study also shows that 59% of rural tourists in Catalonia take three or more trips each year, often returning to the same destination.

A haven for cycling and hiking enthusiasts

Spain has long been known as a training ground for professional cycling teams. What many people don’t know is that Lance Armstrong himself chose Catalonia – specifically Girona – in the 1990s as his training base for the grand tours.

By 2021, La Vanguardia reported that 170 riders and three professional teams had settled in Girona thanks to its proximity to the Pyrenees.

The northernmost province of Catalonia has since consolidated its position as a cycling tourism hotspot. The Vías Verdes de Girona network, with 325 km of paths and cycle routes, generated €6.86 million in revenue for rural tourism businesses in 2022, according to a study by the Girona Provincial Council.

This explains why Girona accounts for 61% of rural tourism interest in Catalonia, followed by Lleida (41%), Barcelona (31%) and Tarragona (29%).
